3 ways for Man United to deal with Eriksen's absence

Christian Eriksen has to leave Old Trafford on crutches after Man United's 3-1 win over Reading in the FA Cup on Saturday night.

Eriksen's return date is still unknown , but this is the time for coach Erik ten Hag to consider options in the absence of the Danish star's service.

MU must worry when Eriksen is injured.

The most logical and feasible scenario in the event that Eriksen has to leave the game is to use Fred. The Brazilian has improved this season and has shown his role as a substitute in the win over Reading, even though this is only a Championship side.

Fred does not possess the creative and technical qualities on the ball like Eriksen, but will bring energy to midfield and work well with Casemiro in one of the two deeper positions in midfield. He has improved this season under Ten Hag and will give United something different.

Fred could be more comfortable in his role, as Casemiro has proven he is not only a world-class 'terminator', but can also do Eriksen's job well, in the distribution of the ball, create, or score.

Motivation from McTominay

Another candidate to replace Eriksen is Scott McTominay. The Scottish midfielder started the season as a mainstay for United, but lost his place in the squad as Casemiro adapted.

Can Fred or McTominay replace Eriksen?

Of course, McTominay is a completely different type of midfielder than Eriksen. He will not bring the attacking mindset or playing expertise of the former Tottenham Hotspur player. The mature player from the Man United training camp will be a better candidate if Casemiro is sidelined due to injury.

McTominay is a box-to-box midfielder and his substitution for Eriksen risks making the team a little more defensive . Once there, Casemiro will once again have to take over Eriksen's duties and be the main coordinator.

Gamble with Mainoo

With Donny van de Beek sidelined for the remainder of the season through injury, United are understaffed in midfield. Here, it is understandable why Ten Hag was eager to sign Frenkie de Jong, or Eriksen, last summer. Man United do not have the same replacement as Eriksen - who can control the game, coordinate the pace of attack in front of the back four.

Although it is a big gamble, but Ten Hag can trust Kobbie Mainoo and give this young talent a taste of Premier League football for the first time.
